When Hail Leaves Its Mark

On October 20, 2019, the National Weather Service rated a North Dallas tornado EF3, with winds peaking near 140 mph on a track of roughly 15.8 miles from near Irving through Preston Hollow. Gusts and hail cause far more of the routine damage.

National Weather Service storm reports list a 76 mph gust at Dallas Love Field on March 2, 2023, with 68 mph in Garland that evening, and a 75 mph gust at Love Field early on May 28, 2024. Gusts like those can lift tabs and peel ridge caps.

The same reports show stones 4 inches across 2 miles west-northwest of Cedar Hill on June 12, 2023. Overnight on April 26, 2026, hail estimated at up to 3 inches was reported near Dallas Baptist University in southwest Dallas. Much smaller stones still bruise shingles.

In February 2021, the Weather Service logged −2°F at DFW, 139 hours at or below freezing and 5 inches of snow; Dallas County was part of the federal disaster declaration that followed. In early 2023, NWS measured roughly half an inch of ice over 88 hours below freezing. Ice can weigh on gutters.

Common Situations

  • Bruised or cracked shingles. Dark, soft spots where granules came loose are hard to see from the yard.
  • Creased or missing tabs. A gust can fold a shingle and break its seal.
  • Dented gutters and vents. Soft metal shows hail hits clearly.

With a claim, your policy and the insurer's scope set the payout; ask how it treats depreciation.

Step by Step

  1. Stay off the roof. If water is coming in, ask a roofer about a tarp.
  2. Photograph everything that day. Capture the date and time, hailstones beside a ruler or coin, wide shots of every side of the house, and any stains or drips inside.
  3. Decide on a claim. If you file, note the claim number.
  4. Request a roofer's visit. The roofer photographs the damage and writes an estimate.
  5. Compare scopes. Set that estimate beside the adjuster's report.

The Difference a Local Match Makes

Dallas requires door-to-door sellers to carry a City solicitor permit, so ask to see it. This site forwards your request to one independent local roofer; the roofing company covers the referral fee, and no money passes between you and the site.

From Claim to Approved Scope

A roofer's part in a claim is narrow: record the damage and price the fix. Dealing with the insurer stays with you, or a public adjuster or attorney you hire. Public adjusters hold Texas Department of Insurance licenses, and state law keeps a contractor from acting as one on a home it is repairing.

Texas law puts the deductible on you; no roofer may waive, rebate or absorb it, or promise to. Insurance-paid roofing contracts of $1,000 or more carry a printed notice saying so. If a seller visits and you sign at home, you can usually back out within three business days. A claim denial later on brings no added cancel right under Texas law.

Questions Homeowners Ask

Does hail always mean a new roof?

No. Small hail may only dent gutters, and scattered damage can often be repaired. Widespread bruising, cracks across several slopes or damage on an older roof can tip the answer toward replacement. The roofer's visit, and your insurer's review if you file, settle it.

Should I call my insurer or a roofer first?

Either order works. Some owners want a roofer's view before weighing a claim against their deductible; others file first. Share the roofer's photos and estimate with your adjuster. Negotiating the claim stays with you or a public adjuster you hire.

Does a storm repair need a Dallas permit?

Small repairs and tarps need none. Replacing a large area or the whole roof needs a City re-roof permit, pulled by a contractor registered with Dallas or an owner working on their own homestead. Ask to see it before work starts; Development Services answers at 214-948-4480.

Will impact-rated shingles help next time?

Class 4 shingles resist hail better than standard ones, though none are hail-proof. Some insurers credit them, each on its own terms, so call yours. Under Texas law most HOAs cannot ban them, though a board can ask for a matching look.

Check for Hail Damage

If the last storm may have reached your roof, ask for a roofer's visit. The roofer checks for hail and wind damage, takes photos and writes an estimate; this site only passes your request along.
